The Organization
Mission and Vision:
Established in 1945 the Richland County Foundation’s vision is to be a leader in community development, innovative granting and endowment building to enrich and improve the quality of life in our community. Our mission is to improve and enhance the quality of life in Richland County through strategic philanthropy and community leadership.

Location:
The Richland County Foundation office is located in Mansfield, Ohio.

The Board of Trustees has begun a national search to seek a successor for their long-tenured President & CEO who recently announced her intention to retire in mid-2010.

The Position

Reporting Relationships:
The President & Chief Executive Officer reports to the Board of Trustees and supervises a staff that currently includes: Vice President for Finance and Operations, Program Officer, Director of Communications, and an Administrative Assistant.

Position Charter:
The President & CEO provides professional leadership and assists the Board of Trustees in all matters related to the execution of the Foundation’s strategic plan and the achievement of its goals; implements Board policies; directs the overall grant making, development, communications and administrative activities of the Foundation.

Major Duties and Responsibilities include:
Planning and Management
• Works with the Board to develop and plan progressive and proactive short- and long-range organizational goals and objectives. Regularly reviews progress with the Board.
• Provides for implementation of the Foundation’s strategic plan and Board policies and procedures.
• Participates in national and state community foundation organizations and keeps the Board informed of current trends and issues impacting foundation operations.
• Provides oversight and participates in the development and grant program operations.
• Together with the Vice President of Finance, develops and manages the Foundation’s operating budget; oversee staff operations.
• Ensures Foundation is in compliance with all federal, state and local laws, including taxing authorities, and consults with legal counsel and other professional advisors as required.

Development and Community Relations
• Building and maintains relationships between the Foundation and donors and prospective donors; and other area foundations and not for profit organizations.
• Designs and implements short- and long-term proactive fund raising plans to generate significant unrestricted and restricted planned gifts to the Foundation.
• Directs, manages and participates in the cultivation of donor contributions.
• Practices and facilitates good client service while maintaining responsible stewardship of all gifts and oversight of communication with current donors.
• Serves as spokesperson for the Foundation to the general public, and other organizations and entities.
• Represents the Foundation at community activities and events, and with community and business leaders including elected officials, donors and their representatives, community residents, and the media.
• Responsible for timely and effective public, community and donor relations and communication including but not limited to the Foundation’s annual report, newsletters, brochures, appeals and activity updates, and press releases; utilizes websites and internet in pursuing responsibilities of the position.

Staff Management
• Assure Foundation staff are trained and coached to a level necessary to achieve the Foundation’s mission, goals and management philosophy.
• Responsible for the hiring, firing, and supervision of Foundation staff. Develop work plans and objectives in conjunction with staff members.
• Arrange training and developmental opportunities for staff. Conduct periodic staff meetings.
• Establish annual performance goals and objectives for staff members.
• Assess staff` performance against goals and objectives and periodically counsel staff members concerning their performance and professional development.
• Administer personnel policies and procedures.
• Manage staff liaison with the Board and Board committees.

Board Relations
• Work with the Chair of the Board in planning and preparing Board meeting agendas. Facilitate the timely preparation and distribution of information needed by the Board for meetings. Prepare for distribution of Board meeting minutes and other Board materials in a timely fashion.
• Attend all Board meetings, provide staff leadership, and report on project progress, major issues, new developments, etc.
• Assure that staff leadership is available for all Board committees; serve as an ex officio member of all Board committees. Facilitate the preparations and dissemination of information needed by each committee.
• Meet regularly with the Chair of the Board, and other Board members as appropriate, supplying background information and clarifying issues.
• Meet with the Chair of the Board annually and more often if needed. Present a written report on the performance of staff for annual salary review, including proposed salary increases for the coming year.
• Participate in annual Board review and evaluations, including self-evaluations as requested by the Chair.

Compensation:
The President & Chief Executive Officer is expected to earn an attractive base salary and benefits; some relocation assistance will be provided.

The Candidate
Education:
A Bachelors degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.

Professional Qualifications:
Candidates may come from a variety of professional backgrounds such as: a top executive of a comparable community foundation; a top executive of a complex nonprofit organization with mission of service to the community; a senior leader at a similar organization who is professionally prepared to step up to the CEO-level position; an experienced for-profit leader with background of service to nonprofits and an interest in this kind of career path. The successful candidate will have a history of achieving organizational growth as a direct result of his/her leadership.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes:
• Executive-level experience: minimum of 5 years of leadership background as the top/senior staff executive in a comparable community foundation, complex nonprofit or for-profit organization.
• Commitment to mission: demonstrated strong belief in and passion for the mission of the Foundation.
• Fund raising: experience with multiple funding activities including development programs, planned giving, special events; and personal experience with successfully soliciting individual donors.
• Donor relations: has developed effective communications and relationships with donors; demonstrated ability to cultivate current donors and expand their commitment to the organization and its mission.
• Grant making: experience including oversight of distribution efforts by the program Officer
• Planning: experience in developing and implementing tactical and strategic plans.
• Management experience: has effectively led a complex organization and managed staffs of professional and hourly employees; strong human resource development and staff training experience.
• Diversity: experience working with diverse groups; promotes diversity programmatically, in staffing,
grant funding and at the Board level; has an appreciation for the value diversity brings to an organization.
• Fiscal management: demonstrated ability to manage financial affairs of an organization; i.e., develop
revenue sources and control expenditures so as to preserve financial stability.
• Board relationships: significant involvement with governance issues and Board of Trustee
interactions.
• Established contacts: demonstrated ability to develop and maintain key local, regional and national
connections with nonprofit, public and private sector leaders.
• Media relations: can effectively articulate goals, objectives and policy positions to the media.
• Community relations: effective interactions with the public, community groups and elected officials;
able to articulate Foundation’s mission, goals and objectives to all audiences; serves as “the public
face” of the Foundation.
• Technology development: (has actively promoted enhancements and expansion of technology within
current organization; computer literate; possesses computer skills, including MS Office Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Challenges and Opportunity
The projected first year accomplishments for the new President & CEO of the Foundation include:
• Become completely familiar with all operating aspects of the Richland County Foundation organization including staff, finances and investments, grant programs, community relationships and Board members.
• Evaluate all aspects of the Foundation organization: programs, staffing, funding, Board recruitment and development, technology, community interaction, facilities and assets; implement and/or make recommendations for enhancements and changes.
• Initiate formal and informal introductions and connections throughout the Richland County area through varied communications and in-person gatherings and meetings.
• In concert with the Board and staff, initiate the strategic direction of the Foundation as established in the strategic planning efforts. Develop the strategic and operational plans to move forward; maintain appropriate focus on strategies while evaluating and surfacing new issues.
Objectives include:
- Build community awareness of the Foundation’s role and distinctive contribution.
- Grow the Foundation’s endowments through proactive donor cultivation.
- Expand the impact of community investments.
- Build organizational capacity.
• Establish presence as Foundation CEO and form effective working relationships with key leaders of
nonprofits, government, business and other Richland County area organizations.

The President & Chief Executive Officer position of the Richland County Foundation is an outstanding
